Maybe you booked your newborn photos a few months ago when you were in your second trimester of pregnancy and thought eventually you’d shop for an outfit for your newborn session. Fast forward and now you are either quickly approaching your due date or maybe baby is already here and you are realizing that you never got around to buying something! Or, maybe you are a planner and you’re 10 weeks pregnant and already thinking about what you will wear to your Boston newborn photo session.
Don’t worry, I’m here to help you figure out what to wear to my Boston newborn photography session.
First of all, don’t worry. We will get gorgeous photos of your baby and your family no matter what you wear!
Don’t spend money on a dress you will only wear once. Let me do that for you!
Seriously, I consider this one of the biggest perks that I offer and a huge differentiator when you choose to work with me over another newborn photographer. Deciding what to wear to my Boston newborn photo session is a major pain in the butt, so I happily offer a variety of options.
All of my client closet dresses are “bump friendly,” which means they can be worn for both maternity sessions and during the weeks after baby arrives when you might still have a little bump. I have carefully choses dresses that are neutral toned, and have some texture, which is attractive in photos.
Everything in my closet also works perfectly with my photography studio set ups. I like to keep everything simple so that you and your baby are the focus of the session, not your outfit. These are the types of dresses you might not own for every day wear, but are perfect for a newborn photo session.
The best part, there is absolutely no charge to use these, so when you’re looking at your investment in a session, this doesn’t have to be an additional expense on top of it.
What to look for in a newborn photography dress
If you decide you’d prefer to buy something yourself for your newborn session, here is what I look for in a dress and what I would personally recommend for you!
- Neutral colors – think creams, browns, tans, beiges, etc
- Texture – gauze material is great, lace, crochet detailing, smocking, ruffle edging, pleating, etc
- Flattering cuts – I love maxi and midi dresses, this isn’t the ideal time for a dress cut above the knee. Off the shoulder and v-necks are super flattering.
Generally, I recommend keeping your dress neutral so that you and your baby are the main focus.

Non-dress outfits for a newborn photography session
Is a dress just not your style? That’s cool, I get it! So what should you wear? Basically just follow the same principles that I outlined in what I look for in a client closet dress, but just for a top! Feel free to wear jeans, leggings, or your favorite pants and choose a neutral top with texture.
Here is a great example of a mom who didn’t wear a dress to her newborn session but her outfit totally worked.
