Buying newborn photography outfits might be one of the most fun parts of my job. You might have read that I have a client closet–I often talk about all the gorgeous dresses I have available to moms for maternity, newborn, and family photo sessions. One thing I forget to talk about are all of the baby clothes that I have for newborn sessions!
Keeping lots of newborn photography outfits in my studio is so important. Its one less thing for you to have to worry about when you’re preparing for your newborn photos, and I make sure to have lots of size and color options available to choose from.
What I look for in newborn outfits for photo sessions
When I’m buying new newborn photography outfits for my client closet, I’m looking for neutral colors, fabrics with texture, and fits that don’t seem too baggy. I don’t want the baby to look like their swimming in the outfit. I also prefer buttons versus a zipper for the front closure. Ideally, there won’t be an ankle to ankle opening at all, if you know what I mean. This does mean these outfits are a little trickier to get onto the baby, but they fit and look so much better.
I love henleys, rib knits, pointelle fabric, and sweater knits. I buy mostly newborn size, but I also have 0-3m and preemie in the studio. While I prefer to have baby’s feet out, I do have some outfits that have footies.
If you like what you see if my photos, here are some of my favorite places to shop for newborn outfits for photo sessions.
Quincy Mae
Quincy Mae is one of my go-to shops for newborn outfits for photos. I especially love their pointelle and ribknit one pieces, but they have adorable linen overalls, simple bodysuits, and gorgeous knitwear. Seriously if I could buy their entire collection every season, I would. They are owned by Rylee + Cru, one of my favorites for older siblings’ outfits. These are definitely “heirloom” quality and price–this is a brand you will find in high end baby boutiques–which is why I love to offer them in my client closet! You might not want to shell out $40 for a newborn sized outfit that your baby will wear for 1 hour, but I will.
Zara Kids
Zara almost always impressively cute neutral knit one pieces. While the product images on their website always confuse me, (Why are they black and white and so far away? How can anyone tell if they want to buy that dress? Am I just really old?) they have lots of great baby options that I would highly recommend.
H&M
I have tons of rib knit bodysuits and leggings sets in pretty neutral colors from H&M, and the best part is they are sooo cheap and usually on a 3 for 2 sale in store. I’ve also found a bunch of long sleeve one pieces with buttons down the front (much more flattering than zippers) and lots of pretty sweater knits.
Target
OK this is probably lame but hear me out. Cat & Jack, Gresyon Mini, and Carters Little Planet are very cute lines at target with lots of cute baby options. My favorite are rib knit henleys, linen overalls, and long sleeve one pieces.
Old Navy
Old Navy is another one that isn’t super exciting, but is cheap, accessible, and has lots of cute baby clothes. Again, my favorites are henleys and rib knit leggings (can you sense a pattern here) and while you’re here you can find outfits for older siblings and dad as well.
