I’ve already posted about what to wear to your boston newborn photography session, but what about what to wear for your maternity photo session? A lot of the same concepts apply when choosing an outfit. But, there are a few things you might specifically want to look for. Whether you want to wear something from my client closet, buy something new, or dress more casually, this blog post is for you!
Client Closet – dresses ideal for maternity photos
One of the best things about hiring me (in my humble opinion) is that I have a client closet full of gorgeous dresses that are perfect for maternity photos. If you don’t want to even think about buying something new or combing through your closet for something to wear, look no further. You can wear one (or more) of my dresses without an additional fee. This makes figuring out what to wear for your maternity photo session easier than ever.
My client closet dresses are all midi or maxi length, neutral in colors (think earth tones like white, cream, tan, beige, brown, muted green). The color palette is flattering for everyone and goes with any backdrop–whether we’re shooting with purple flowering trees in the Spring, green grasses, Fall foliage, or my studio.
Most have some texture to the fabric, and they are all “bump friendly.” This means they are great for maternity sessions, but also great for postpartum bodies and newborn photos. I like to find flattering cuts, meaning flowy higher waists. While I love these dresses for maternity and newborn photos, they also work for family sessions as well!
Buy something new for your session
If you’ve decided to purchase a new dress for your maternity photos, I am here for that! Feel free to send me links if you need help deciding between options. Just as you read above about what I look for in a client closet dress, my advice is to find something:
- Neutral colors – earth tones are perfect
- Bump friendly – this doesn’t have to mean its specifically made or labeled as maternity, but there is room for a bump
- Flowy, texturized fabrics
- I don’t mind a print (for one person in the group only please), but I suggest keeping it subtle. The focus should be on you and your family, not your outfit.
Some of my favorite places to shop for maternity photos dresses:
Please just remember that if you are ordering something, to give yourself plenty of time for delivery, and even exchanging if the sizes aren’t right. Also, keep in mind that you will be growing 🙂
One caveat here: if a flowy dress is not your style, that is fine! These are things that I look for in dresses because I find them aesthetically pleasing. Do you love bright colors and wild prints? These are your photos! Not mine. Be yourself.
Don’t want to wear a dress? That’s cool
Expanding on that caveat….I know I go on and on about these gorgeous dresses, but not everyone is a dress person, and that is totally fine! If you’d rather wear jeans or leggings and a sweater or a cute top, that is cool! I am also here for an “intimate” studio session, if you are. Think a lacey robe and underwear set. I think these images are SOOO SOOO gorgeous, if you do too, let’s do it!
Whatever you choose to wear for your maternity photo session, we will create beautiful images together than you will love.
