If you’ve just started researching newborn photographers, you might be wondering, what does a typical studio newborn photoshoot look like? After 12 years of photographing babies and their families, I have this process down to make it as seamless and easy as possible for families.
Booking your studio newborn photoshoot
After you send in an inquiry, I’ll send you detailed pricing and session information, and offer to have a quick phone consultation to discuss any questions you might have. Some people love this, others choose to discuss over email. Either is fine with me! Once your questions are all answered and you’re ready to book, I’ll send over a contract for you to sign and an invoice for my session fee to get you booked into my calendar.
I do recommend that you book during your pregnancy, to ensure you have a slot on my calendar. If baby is already here, I can usually squeeze you in, but I have more flexibility with more notice. I will put your due date on my calendar, and check in if I haven’t heard from you by then. When baby arrives, we’ll schedule your exact date and location.
Preparing for your studio newborn photoshoot
At booking, I’ll send you my guide on what to wear, so you don’t need to worry about this while you’re caring for a new infant. I also have a client closet with a bunch of dresses and outfits for baby, if you don’t want to buy something or choose something from your closet! They are all post-partum friendly and photograph beautifully.
I’ll send you a short questionnaire to help me prepare for your session, as well as a prep guide for you!
The studio newborn photoshoot
You’ll walk into my Dedham studio and I’ll tell you to make yourself at home, and that you can put your stuff down on the couch. We’ll start by discussing outfits and you can try on a few of my dresses if you’d like to wear one. If baby hasn’t eaten yet, I’ll have you change and feed them, and then we’ll get started!
I’ll direct you into very natural poses where you’re just snuggling and holding your baby. The goal is for you to look like the best version of yourself, not stiff and awkwardly posed. I have a bunch of backdrops including a neutral bed set up, a huge wall of windows, and a double sided wall on casters that will serve as the background of the photos, keeping the focus on you and your babe.
My sessions are family focused, so parents and older siblings are involved the whole time. We’ll get individual parent shots, sibling shots, baby alone, and TONS of the whole family. While I have a typical workflow that I use, I try to keep everything super casual and go with the flow. If your 2 year old doesn’t want to do something, we’ll pivot, no big deal!
The studio is a great location for newborn photos for so many reasons. Great light, client closet, neutral backdrops, a private bathroom and family sitting area, etc. But mostly its a convenience to be able to show up without having to clean your house, and have everything ready for us. I am so grateful to be able to offer this luxury experience to my clients.
Sessions usually last about an hour, but I only schedule one daytime session a day so you don’t have to feel rushed. If baby needs to eat or be changed, its completely fine. We’re done when we’re done!
After the studio newborn photoshoot
The day after your session, I’ll send a reminder email going over what will happen next. Within 3 weeks from your session date, I’ll send you a slideshow with 60+ fully edited images. At this point you can choose your package/image and download them immediately! After you purchase your images, you can buy products through me if you wish, or you can choose to print them on your own. You’re able to share/post your purchased images as well!
If you have any questions about how the studio newborn photoshoots go, please feel free to fill out a contract form! I’d love to help guide you through the process and get to work together!
