Wondering which spots in your home will work for your in home newborn photo session? One of the biggest hesitations parents have about booking an in-home newborn session is wondering, “Will my house work for photos?”
Between sleepless nights, laundry piles, and baby gear everywhere, it’s completely normal to worry that your home isn’t “photo-ready.” The good news? You don’t need a perfect house to have beautiful newborn photos.
During an in-home newborn session, we typically use just a handful of thoughtfully chosen spots — places with good light, neutral backgrounds, and space for natural moments to unfold. Here’s a look at the areas of your home we most often use, and why they work so well.
The Primary Bedroom
The primary bedroom is almost always our first stop, and for good reason. Beds naturally create a cozy, intimate setting that’s perfect for newborn photos. Parents can sit or lie comfortably, babies can be snuggled safely, and the mood feels calm and connected.
What makes bedrooms ideal:
- Soft, natural light from nearby windows
- Neutral bedding creates a clean backdrop
- A relaxed environment for feeding and soothing
You don’t need a magazine-worthy bedroom. Making the bed with neutral sheets or a simple duvet is usually more than enough. I’ll position you in the best light and gently guide everything else.
The Nursery
Whether your nursery is fully decorated or still coming together, it’s a meaningful place to document.
This space represents so much anticipation and love — and newborn photos here capture the story of where your baby belongs.
We often photograph:
- Baby in the crib or bassinet
- Parents holding baby in a rocker or glider
- Parents standing together near the window
- Include nursery details like artwork, shelves, or meaningful décor
If the nursery gets good natural light, it can be one of the most beautiful and personal locations in your home.
The Living Room
Living rooms are wonderful for lifestyle family photos, especially when there are siblings involved.
This space allows for:
- Snuggling on the couch
- Including pets into the family photo
- Natural interactions that feel unposed
Living rooms tend to have larger windows, which means great light and more flexibility for movement. We’ll clear small areas as needed and work around what’s already there — no full cleanup required.
Near Large Windows or Sliding Doors
Light matters more than space. Some of the best newborn photos happen in unexpected places — simply because the light is beautiful. A corner of a room near a large window, sliding glass door, or French doors can become the perfect backdrop.
You don’t need to know where these areas are — that’s part of my job. I’ll walk through your home and find the best light when I arrive.
Hallways and Transitional Spaces
Surprisingly, hallways and stairwells can be fantastic for photos.
If a hallway has a window at one end or overhead light filtering in, it can create:
- Beautiful, even lighting
- Clean, minimal backgrounds
- Interesting perspective and depth of field
These spaces often go unnoticed but can produce some of the most timeless images of the session.
What We Don’t Use (And Why That’s Okay)
We don’t need:
- Every room in your home
- Perfectly styled spaces
- Spotless counters or shelves
Most in-home newborn sessions use 3–5 small areas total. The goal is not to document your house — it’s to document your family in it. If something doesn’t photograph well, we simply won’t use it.
How to Prep Your Home (Without Stress)
A few simple steps go a long way:
- Open all curtains and blinds
- Make the bed in the primary bedroom
- Clear small surfaces near windows if possible
- Set your thermostat a little warmer for baby
That’s it. No deep cleaning required.
The Beauty of In-Home Newborn Sessions
In-home newborn photography is about comfort, connection, and honesty. These sessions reflect what life truly looks like in the early days — quiet moments, gentle light, and the spaces where your family is learning each other.
Your home doesn’t need to be perfect.
Your baby doesn’t need to sleep the whole time.
You just need to show up and love on your little one.
The rest is taken care of.
If you’re considering an in-home newborn session and wondering whether your space will work, I promise — it will. I’ve photographed newborns in apartments, townhomes, condos, and houses of every size, and beautiful images come from every single one.
