Preparing for your Newborn Session

Preparing for Your Newborn SessionYay your baby is finally here! Congratulations! I cannot wait to meet your little one and photograph their cuteness. Here’s all the information on how preparing for your newborn session:

WHERE AM I GOING?

My studio is located in my home at: 25 Brown Ave, RoslindaleGive me a call when you get here and come to the front door (through the gate.) 508-254-6652

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE?

There are a few things you can do to help our chances of a happy, sleepy baby.

  1. Feed baby right before you leave for your session. Hopefully, baby will be full and sleepy when you arrive, and we can get started right away. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN TO DO PREPARE!
  2. Keep baby awake for an hour or two before you come. The sleepier baby is on arrival, the quicker and easier the entire session will be. I know this is really hard to do in the first few weeks, so please don’t stress about it. If you can, give baby a bath and play with them in just a diaper before your last feed.
  3. Dress baby in a zip up sleeper that won’t have to go over their head and wake them up.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

Please bring plenty of formula or pumped milk, or be prepared to nurse during the session. The key to keeping baby asleep is a full belly!

Please also bring extra diapers and wipes, and a pacifier (even if baby doesn’t usually use one).

Feel free to bring food/drinks. I’ll have you feed baby during the session to keep her sleeping, but for the most part, you can sit back and relax (and nap if you want!)

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

I’ll have the heat on high (75-80 degrees) to keep baby comfortable. Please be prepared to dress accordingly as well! If you want to do parent shots, I suggest wearing something light weight and comfy and bringing an outfit to change into.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING FOR PARENT & SIBLING OUTFITS?

For posed shots, I love moms in white or black tank tops so we really see skin on skin with naked baby. Dads look great in white or black plain T shirts.

For lifestyle shots on the bed, I suggest bringing jeans and a comfy white/cream colored sweater. Dad can wear jeans and a plain neutral colored t shirt. The bed set up is all cream, so if you’d like to wear something else, it won’t clash.

If you’d like to wear a dress, I have a few gorgeous ones to choose from. Check out my client closet here! I’m happy to help you with styling your outfits as well.

Siblings should follow suit as above. The focus is really on baby and the relationships, so there’s no need to worry too much about the outfits. Simple neutral colors work great.

HOW WILL THE SESSION GO?

I start each session with the diaper on and wrap baby up to get them into a deep sleep. Throughout the session, I’ll unwrap them to reveal their tiny toes for a few poses. Usually this is when baby is ready to to eat again, and then we do parent shots with baby naked, and a few more poses if they are still asleep!

When there is an older sibling, family and sibling shots are done with baby wrapped at the beginning of the session.

“Accidents” are totally normal and I’m very used to being around naked babies, so don’t worry! I expect it—everything that I put them on naked is washable.

DO I NEED TO BRING PROPS?

I have tons of backgrounds, hats, headbands, and props, so you don’t have to worry about bringing anything!

HOW LONG WILL THE SESSION BE?

Sessions are customized to you. The session will last 2-3 hours, depending on how well baby sleeps. If at any time you are DONE, just let me know! My goal is just to get you as many great shots with a variety as I can, but I understand that you are exhausted, and this is a long time.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

After your session is over, I’ll have the photos ready for you to view within three days. I’ll send you a link where you can place your order and choose your images!

Please feel free to give me a call if you have any other questions, otherwise, I will see you soon! I hope this helped you in preparing for your newborn session!
